Hi-res disc vs albums and prints
In today’s digital world most of our photos never see the light of day…well, not beyond the lovely glow of our computer screens anyway. More and more I hear potential clients talk about how all they “really need is the disc” rather than booking a wedding collection that includes the album. I suppose they feel they don’t really need it or it will save them a few dollars. But are the few dollars saved really worth it down the road? I may be biased but I don’t think so.
When I was growing up I use to spend hours looking at my family’s photo albums. Every summer I would visit my grandmother and we would go over every single photo. She would tell me who every person was (for the thousandth time) and I would ooo and ahh over the clothes they wore and the places they traveled. (In full disclosure, reading this article really spurred me to blog about the subject not to mention some recent client conversations.) These are memories I hold very dear and I can’t imagine the experience would have been the same had I stood over her shoulder watching a slideshow on her Mac. Not even close. Real photos. That tangible memory you hold in your hand doesn’t quite translate the same in the digital form.
Another reason I encourage you to order prints and take the album is we don’t really know how long a dvd will last and as the article above points out, technology changes so fast you might not be able to access them in the future. If you loose it during your move to that new house you just bought, I shudder to think how saddened you would be to not have those photos. So a few lessons here: make back ups (your photographer isn’t responsible if you loose your disc and it will likely cost you for a new one) and print out those photos. Even if you don’t have me do it for you. Do it for yourself and maybe the grandchild you’ve yet to meet. He or she will thank you later.
